When looking for a process improvement practitioner, there are several key qualities and skills for consideration. Some key areas to focus on, but not limited to, are:

Strong Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: A process improvement practitioner should have a strong analytical mindset and be able to identify inefficiencies and waste in existing processes. They should be skilled in using various analytical techniques and tools to gather and analyze data, identify root causes, and propose effective, reliable, and sustainable solutions.

Process Improvement Methodologies: Look for someone who is well-versed in process improvement tools and methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Agile. They should have a deep understanding of these frameworks and know how to apply them effectively to drive change.

Knowledge of Process Mapping and Analysis: The practitioner should be able to create detailed process maps to visualize current workflows and identify areas for improvement or enhancements.

Change Management Expertise: Process improvement often involves implementing changes within an organization, which can be met with resistance. A good practitioner should have strong change management skills and be able to effectively communicate the need for change, address concerns, and engage stakeholders at all levels.

Continuous Improvement Mindset: Look for someone who is passionate about continuous improvement and demonstrates a proactive attitude toward seeking out opportunities for optimization.

Data-Driven Decision Making: Look for someone who can collect and analyze the necessary data, interpret the results, and use that data and results to support their recommendations and track the impact of process improvements.

Past Experience and Track Record: Evaluate the practitioner’s previous experience and track record in process improvement initiatives. Request examples of successful projects they have led or contributed to, and seek references from previous clients or employers to validate their expertise.

Be an Informal Influencer: Important business problems are rarely solved by one person.  A great practitioner will have the ability to create a goal-driven, collaborative team environment and inspire others to engage in the journey.

Remember, finding the right process improvement practitioner is not just about their qualifications and skills; it’s also about their fit with your organization’s culture, values, and goals.
